Looking towards The Future

Imagine a continent where surpluses of agricultural commodities are exported to other continents rather than importing food to feed the population. Imagine a continent where youth unemployment is at its lowest ebb due to efficiencies the sector that has created many jobs. Imagine a continent where smallholder farmers, who are in the majority, are leading the drive and transformation agenda of the sector instead of following.

The Challenges

One of the challenges facing the agricultural sector is how to feed the increasing human population amidst the eminent impacts of climate change. The global population is estimated to reach 9 billion in 2050.

Africa is seen as playing a critical role in addressing this. Yet, it’s agricultural sector is engulfed with many challenges especially associated with the activities of smallholder farmers who form the majority. In the midst of such challenges, however, are enormous opportunities for growth that can catapult it out of food insecurity, poverty and youth unemployment.
